CNinsure edges higher on upbeat analyst note

Analyst reaffirms 'Buy' rating on CNinsure, raises 2008 profit estimate

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - A Wall Street analyst on Tuesday urged investors to buy shares of CNinsure Inc., applauding its second-quarter results and calling a new distribution agreement promising.

The Chinese insurance agency and brokerage, in agreement with Sino Life Insurance Co., will now market a new life insurance product custom-designed by Swiss Reinsurance Co.

The product, which combines accidental, healthcare, whole life, pension and annuity features into one offering "further strengthens (CNinsure's) life insurance capabilities," Piper Jaffray analyst Michael F. Grasher wrote in a note to clients.

He also noted that the opportunities within the Chinese insurance market have yet to be reflected in CNinsure's share price, and he raised his earnings estimate for the year by 6 cents to 66 cents per share. Grasher expects the company's growth strategies to continue to capitalize on industry fragmentation.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters predict a profit of 62 cents per share for the year.

Last week, CNinsure reported its net income surged 84 percent in the second quarter to $8.8 million, or 19 cents per share, as revenue more than doubled to $31.3 million.

Its results easily topped Wall Street's target of a per-share profit of 13 cents, with revenue of $24.8 million.

The upside resulted from higher-than-expected commission and fees, as the company continued its growth strategy during the quarter, Grasher said.

Grasher maintained a "Buy" rating on the shares.

In March, CNinsure said it acquired majority stakes in two property and casualty insurers, boosting its geographic reach in China.

The company now owns a 55 percent stake in Shenzhen Huameng Insurance Brokerage Co. and 70 percent of Fuzhou Guoxin Insurance Agency Co. CNinsure had previously owned 5 percent in each company.

The company has been expanding through acquisitions since its initial public offering late last year.

American Depositary Shares of CNinsure rose 33 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $13.60 in afternoon trading.
